PETER partners take lead role in major Malaysian traceability conference

Representatives of virtually all the partners in the EU's PETER Project on traceability in the food supply chain will be among the speakers at a major traceability conference to be held in Malaysia from April 1 - 2, 2008.

"Food Traceability - The Key To Global Market Access" has been structured to help stakeholders in the SE Asia food and feedstuffs supply chains to increase their exports to the European Union through a better understanding of traceability requirements.

The conference, at the Sunway Resort near Kuala Lumpur, brings together leading traceability experts from Europe and senior industry and public authority figures from South East Asia.

PETER partners will present one of the conference's key sessions: The European Programme - New Science in Traceability. Among the speakers will be:

  • Michel Debord, PETER Project co-ordinator, France : The Peter Project and its potential impact on Asia.
  • Paul Brereton, TRACE Project co-ordinator, UK : New approaches for tracing the origin of food.
  • Erling Larsen, SEAFOODplus, Denmark : New seafood supply from aquaculture and the need for traceability
  • Elena Maestri, University of Parma, Italy : Detection and tracking of DNA of alien origin in food and the food chain
  • Dominque Pallet, CIRAD, France : Implementing a "networking platform" to promote and enhance science and technical co-operation in food quality and safety between Europe and Asia
  • Prof. Anthony Furness, FoodTrace, UK : The FoodTrace framework and the Internet of things
  • Dominique Buffet, Geo TraceAgri, Belgium : Linking geographical information with classical traceability data to facilitate the certification of product origin

The conference will include presentations addressing the technical aspects of traceability such as the specification and implementation of systems, while others will examine marketing issues and how traceability can be used to add value to products.
